Beginning and end
I love artistic pieces that use type and lettering. So I ventured and looked for a sentiment that I wanted to „illustrate“. Having a background in ancient greek language, the expression „alpha kai omega“ came to mind and my – not so christian – interpretation of it. So I started drawing letterforms and eventually physically produced it as a black woodcut mounted on a textured white solid woodplate.
My whisky
For my thesis I combined my love for whisky and lettering in a branding project. I developed a simple concept for a distillery and more elaborate stories for the three whiskys it produces. I expanded those quite narrative stories into „brandsheets“, which specify what kind of emotion or characteristics should be incorporated in the different elements of the design. Those were used to create the names, letterings, colours, eventually the whole packaging and branding. This ensures that one can make confident decisions without having to come up with random, unusable solutions. The result was modern packaging for a conservative product without losing the strong message it conveys for the passionate whisky-drinker.
Changing places
For my semester abroad I spent half a year in the beautiful capital of Hungary. Inspired from the architecture and general image I have of Budapest, I created „redesigns“ of places that were important to me during that time. The style I generally went for was art-deco based but influenced by my own. The results are Logos/letterings/posters for a pub, a club, a grocery shop, three metro-stations, my university MoMe and my address/district.
One's character is one's fate
During my time as tutor in the lithographic shop in my unversity I learned and taught the craft. From grinding stones, drawing and painting on them to etching the ink. I produced this print in many different versions, colors and on different kinds of paper. It is my interpretation of a sentiment of Heraclitus. ἦθος ἀνθρώπῳ δαίμων a man's character is his fate.
Big little critters
My first contact with design and art was through photography, so it still has a dear place in my heart and I will always have an over-the-top camera nearby. I love to capture different textures that may be overseen in everyday life. So I got hold of some exotic insects and paired them with matching substrate. And with just several extension tubes, a 100mm makro lens and a dozen exposures for focus-stacking I captured the intricate nooks and crannies of these little animals.
